I wish people would go back to the old fashioned method of using words instead of letters, but then I find I am also guilty of using acronyms instead of words. Sometimes I am not sure what all of the letters mean. I am sure that parents feel the same way. Below is a list of common acronyms used by teachers, I will update this list as I think of more.
AL- Another Look -Another Look is a supplemental math book for students who are struggling.
DOL- Daily Oral Language - This is two sentences that children edit for grammatical mistakes every day.
DR -Daily Review
DRA -Diagnostic Reading Assessment -This is a reading assessment that the whole district gives the students in the upper grade level classrooms.
EYT –Extend Your Thinking -Extend Your Thinking is a supplemental math book that challenges children.
Fast Forward -A computerized program for improving reading skills
GO- Graphic Organizer -Teachers use graphic organizers to help children organize their thinking.

IEP -Individual Educational Plan- This is a meeting that parents, classroom teachers, and special education teachers have to share information about testing and discuss future special educational needs for a child.
IPP -Individual Potential Plan - This is the plan that teachers write goals for every child and share it with the parents.
IR -Independent Read - The children read silently in class. They also work on reading strategies.
KWL - Know, Want to know, Learned -This is a graphic organizer that teachers use to activate children's prior knowledge before learning

MEAP - Michigan Education Assessment Program -This is the test the state gives to all children in Michigan every year.
MLPP -Michigan Literacy Proficiency Profile - This is a folder of assessments that the teachers keep on every child. These assessments drive our instruction.
PS –Problem Solving -Problem Solving is a supplemental math book that are story problems or real life problems.
RtI- Response to Intervention- An educational team works together to assess and discuss individual needs. The group plans instruction and works with children based on individual needs. This is an attempt to prevent children from entering special education. The children must go through the RTI before they may be placed in special education department.
SN- Science Notebook -This is the notebook that children write about science experience. This gives them opportunities to think like a scientist.
SST -Student Study Team - Meetings teachers have to figure out how to best help students
STAR test -a reading and math test given on the computer. The test gives a grade level equivalent score.
TOD - Ticket out the Door - The work must be completed and turned in before the children may leave. Don't worry, We have never kept children all night.
WN -Writer's Notebook -The children practice writing skills in their writer's notebook.
